MSI Reproductive Choices (MSI) continues to be the provider of the community vasectomy service

Service offer includes:

  • Pre-operative consultation (virtual or face-to-face)

  • No-scalpel vasectomy procedure

  • 24-hour aftercare support

  • Postal semen testing (~PVSA)

  • Access to counselling where required

 


Eligibility criteria

Inclusions

  • Adult males aged 18 and above who wish to have a vasectomy procedure and agree to pre-vasectomy counselling after all contraceptive options have been considered.
  • They must not be acting under duress and be able to give informed consent

Exclusions

  • Anybody under the age of 18 years.
  • Anybody not registered with a North East London GP.
  • Lack of informed consent.
  • History of an allergy to local anaesthetic or any other allergy that may cause anaphylaxis.
  • History of fainting easily.
  • Patient refusal of local anaesthesia.
  • Those deemed unsuitable for local anaesthetic.
  • Known underlying haematological coagulation disorders.
  • Patients requiring vasectomy under general anaesthetic.
  • Patients requesting reversal of vasectomy

Surgery should be delayed if the following conditions are present:

  • Scrotal skin infections.
  • Active sexually transmitted disease.
  • Balanitis.
  • Epididymitis.
  • Orchitis.

Caution is needed in the following conditions and referral to a specialist may be necessary or a general anaesthetic required:

  • Varicocele.
  • Inguinal hernia.
  • Cryptorchidism.
  • Anticoagulant therapy.
  • Previous scrotal surgery.
  • Hydrocele.
  • BMI>35.
  • Drug or alcohol misuse.

Referral methods: e-Referrals

GPs can refer patients using either of the following three options:

  • NHS e-Referral Service (eRS) (indirectly bookable)
  • MSI Reproductive Choices UK referral form (please see downloads)
  • Providing the patient with a UBRN, enabling them to book directly

If patients are provided with a UBRN, they can book using either of the two following options:

  • Call MSI’s dedicated booking line: 0345 300 8090
  • Book online via MSI’s client portal, Blue Door, which allows patients to access services, complete their medical history, and manage their own appointments
