Suspected Wet AMD Referrals to Ophthalmology (NEL)
Local optometrists have been informed that patients with suspected wet AMD must not be referred via the GP as this creates a significant delay in patients being seen and may result in the serious consequence of permanent sight loss. However, optometrists do make errors and if your practice receives a referral for suspected Wet AMD it is imperative for your patient that these are referred immediately to the patients choice of provider via the bespoke email addresses for urgent Wet AMD as follows:
It is important that you should feed back to the optometrist that you have actioned the referral and suggest they review the instructions for suspected Wet AMD referrals which are available here
If you are unsure what an optometrist referral is for (other than Wet AMD) you can always use the Ophthalmology Review Service on eRS where referrals (GOS18s) are reviewed and triaged to the correct services.
Any queries please contact River Calveley (NEL Planned Care) rcalveley@nhs.net
