The first seizure clinic is a specialist clinic run weekly by a Consultant Neurologist and Epileptologist for anyone with a suspected first seizure or a new diagnosis of epilepsy.

The current NICE guidelines (2012) on epilepsy and epileptic seizures recommend that all people with a suspected first seizure or a new diagnosis should be seen by a specialist within 2 weeks. 


Eligibility criteria

Inclusions

Anyone who has had a suspected first seizure.

Exclusions

Anyone:

  • with a previous diagnosis
  • with a known diagnosis of psychogenic non epileptic seizure
  • under the age of 16
  • with any primary neurological presentation other than seizure related.

Referral into the first seizure clinic should be made via e-RS choosing the 'First Seizure' option and not via general Neurology.
