The “Salt & Ice Challenge” is circulating again on social media, causing serious cold burns in children and young people.
It involves placing salt on the skin and pressing ice on top, triggering a chemical reaction that can result in frostbite-like injuries.

Risks:
• Deep burns and permanent scarring
• Nerve damage
• Safeguarding concerns due to self-inflicted harm
• Injuries may require hospital treatment or skin grafts
• Young people often don’t realise the damage until it’s too late

First Aid Guidance:
• Cool the area under lukewarm water for 10+ minutes
• Cover with cling film
• Seek medical help immediately

Safeguarding Considerations:
Be alert to children or young people presenting with unexplained burn injuries.
Consider the possibility of online challenge involvement and assess for underlying safeguarding risks.
