Addressing excess weight in primary care

Patients living in larger bodies continue to experience high levels of weight-based discrimination in healthcare settings resulting in lower health seeking behaviour in a population at high risk of chronic health conditions. As healthcare professionals, discussing weight, especially in the context of pressured appointment times and competing priorities, can feel difficult. Yet when these conversations don’t go according to our best intentions, patients can end up feeling judged, shamed, alienated or simply referred to the wrong service, adding months of waiting time before accessing the correct treatment.

This session will aim to support clinicians to feel more confident in addressing excess weight in primary care settings, to be able to screen for eating disorders requiring specialist treatment and improve understanding of the current treatment pathways and services within City and Hackney.
