City & Hackney CCG is delighted to share that one of our local practices, the Richmond Road Medical Centre, has won ‘GP Team of the Year’ at the National General Practice Awards 2020 – an inspiring feat in view of the challenges surgeries have been facing while responding to COVID-19.
Dr Gopal Mehta, practice partner at Richmond Road, is keen to share how the practice has adapted to meet the changing demands of its growing population during the pandemic.
‘Whilst remaining amongst the highest clinical outcome achievers nationally, we have: pioneered a 48 Hour access model; fully embraced digital technology; delivered 8am-8pm opening; channelled provision of in-house yoga and mindfulness for patients; and enhanced the awareness and management of mental health within the entire borough’, he said. ‘With the incredible pressures faced by the NHS as we battle the pandemic alongside the regular demands on local healthcare services, it has not been easy on the front-line; yet the entire team have continued to work even harder. We are exceptionally proud of what everyone achieved’.
Health and well-being has been a high priority for the practice. In addition to introducing in-house mindfulness and yoga across all three sites, ‘Wellness Wednesday’ gives staff a protected hour each week when they can focus on their wellbeing. In response to COVID-19, the practice also made weekly sessions virtual and accessible online for its patients, with over 200 joining weekly. Staff also organised a ‘Health & Wellbeing Event’ at Aldersbrook Medical, which was attended by over 250 patients and raised over £500 for Haven House Children’s Hospice from a Cake Sale organised by the PPG, an impressive achievement.
This is the fourth year in a row that Richmond Road has featured at the National General Practice Awards, which celebrate excellence in healthcare. In 2019, the practice was a finalist in the ‘Reception Team of the Year’ category; the year before, Dr Gopal Mehta was highly commended in the ‘GP of the Year’ prize; and in 2017, the surgery won ‘Practice of the Year’.
Dr Mehta told us that the team were dedicating the award to the entire Richmond Road Team, affectionately known as the ‘Richmond Road Family’. He added that ‘there is no hierarchy, just one team – this is vitally important to us and keeps us going every day.
‘We are lucky to be working within a diverse, dynamic and supportive borough and are very thankful for the support and encouragement we have received from both the City and Hackney CCG and City and Hackney GP Confederation over the years’.
Coverage of the win has featured in the Hackney Citizen and the Hackney Gazette.
